Report: Roethlisberger’s deal has base value of $99 million

Published

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s new contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly has a base value of $99 million over five years, with escalators that can reach $108 million.

Financial terms of the extension were not revealed when the Steelers made the announcement Friday, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported some of the salary numbers Saturday. The report did not include the guaranteed money, including the signing bonus.

A source told Pro Football Talk that the value of Roethlisberger’s contract would not be leaked at the specific direction of the team and the player.

Roethlisberger was in the final year of an eight-year, $102 million deal and was set to make $11.6 million in 2015. He had a salary-cap number of $18.395 million, but the Steelers declined to say whether the extension lowered the cap hit for 2015.

Roethlisberger had one of his best seasons in 2014, setting career highs by completing 67.1 percent of his passes for 4,952 yards and 32 touchdowns. The Steelers lost a home wild-card game to the Baltimore Ravens to conclude the season. In his 11-year career, Roethlisberger has thrown for 39,057 yards, 251 yards and 131 interceptions.

At Friday’s press conference announcing the deal, Steelers president Art Rooney II stressed the importance keeping the franchise quarterback so the team can contend for more titles.

“Having Ben has been a great run that we’ve had,” he said, “so we’re really excited to continue the opportunity that having a player like Ben gives us to be competitive and to try and compete for championships. There’s no other way to do it these days in the league.”

Roethlisberger, 33, has led the Steelers to two Super Bowl victories (and a loss) as their quarterback.

“This is where I want to be, and I’m just happy that I can be here,” Roethlisberger said. “Our first and foremost goal is winning Lombardi Trophies. I think we’ve got a good young football team with a lot of talent and a lot of ability, and that’s what I said coming over here: Is there room in that trophy case for more trophies? Because that’s got to be our goal.”
