Report: Redskins hire Callahan as OL coach
The Washington Redskins tabbed former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Bill Callahan to be their offensive line coach, according to reports Thursday.
Callahan received what ESPN called a lucrative three-year contract from the Redskins.
Callahan is considered one of the best coaches in the NFL. He turned Dallas’ offensive line into one of the best in the league this season.
The Redskins’ offensive line, meanwhile, is need of help after struggling in pass protection last season. Washington blockers gave up 58 sacks this season, the second-highest total in the NFL.
Callahan also has head coaching experience with the Oakland Raiders, leading them to the Super Bowl after coach Jon Gruden was traded to Tampa Bay. He served as Gruden’s offensive line coach form 1998 to 2001 before replacing Gruden.
In Washington, Callahan will be joining the staff of Gruden’s brother, Jay, who is the Redskins’ head coach.
According to reports, Callahan had numerous offers from teams before deciding on the Redskins.
He leaves the Cowboys after his play-calling role was taken away by coach Jason Garrett after one year and given to Scott Linehan, who was promoted to offensive coordinator on Thursday by Dallas.
