Report: Owners to vote on playoff expansion
NFL owners will vote in March on a proposed new playoff system that will expand from 12 teams to 14 and include reseeding, ESPN reported Sunday.
A formula that owners will discuss is that, in addition to first-round byes for the teams with the best record in the AFC and NFC, two divisional champions in each conference will be guaranteed a home game. The remaining four teams in each conference will be seeded based on win-loss record.
The idea of reseeding teams was previously tabled by owners. However, supporters of the proposed system believe that expanding the postseason will be a positive change from the current system.
The winner of the NFC South will have no better than an 8-8 record this season. That has led to criticism of the current format because all division winners are rewarded with a home game, regardless of record.
Since 1990, the league’s postseason format has included 12 teams.
