Report: Lynch mulling retirement

Published

on

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is considering retiring from the NFL following the end of this season, according to a report by the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Seahawks have long been rumored to be considering parting ways with the star running back due to a combination of his $5 million salary for 2015, his age (28) and running style, and recent reports that the front office is tired of his mercurial personality. However, sources “with direct knowledge of Lynch’s thinking” told Rapoport that Lynch may beat them to the punch by retiring.

Lynch reportedly told two teammates last season that he was considering walking away from the game after the Seahawks won the franchise’s first Super Bowl. He skipped the offseason program and held out of training camp until the team reworked his contract to bump his 2014 salary to $6.5 million.

Lynch has again been the physical force in the Seahawks’ offense, rushing for 956 yards and nine touchdowns, and playing an increased role as Seattle has won five of its past six games. While he has not missed a game, Lynch has dealt with significant back pain stemming from compressed cartilage in his spinal cord.

One key factor in Lynch’s future could be Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable. According to Rapoport, the two have a strong relationship and Lynch could follow Cable to another team should Cable land a head coaching job after this season.
