Rookie receiver Devin Smith of the New York Jets, who was hospitalized Friday because of what was initially diagnosed as broken ribs, also sustained a punctured lung, according NJ.com.

Smith, the Jets’ second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, hit the ground hard at training camp after making a leaping catch of a deflected sideline pass over cornerback Marcus Williams.

The speedy receiver got hit in the back of the head by safety Jaiquawn Jarrett and left the field gingerly. He later was hospitalized for precautionary purposes.

One person familiar with the situation told NJ.com on Saturday that Smith’s lung was only “slightly” punctured and he would be OK.

Smith is expected to miss the majority of camp and his status for the Sept. 13 season opener against the Cleveland Browns remains uncertain.

The Jets are hoping to add Smith to a receiving corps that includes Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Smith and Jeremy Kerley are in contention for the No. 3 receiver spot.

Over four seasons at Ohio State, Smith caught 121 passes for 2,503 yards and 30 touchdowns. In 2014, he caught 33 passes for a team-high 931 yards — a 28.2 yards per reception to set an Ohio State single-season record — and 12 touchdowns.
