Report: Cowboys plan to keep Garrett

Published

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett’s job appears safe, ESPN reported Sunday.

Garrett is in the final year of his contract and the team has finished 8-8 the past three seasons.

The Cowboys, who entered Sunday at 9-4, have slowed down after a hot start but are still guaranteed to finish the season with a winning record.

According to the report, owner/general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones have been telling people they plan to retain Garrett, even if the Cowboys miss the playoffs.

“Obviously, it’s an improvement this year, and an improvement at a time when a lot of people didn’t think we would improve,” Stephen Jones told Dallas radio station 1310-AM The Ticket on Wednesday night. “They actually thought we might go backwards, and here we are at nine wins with three games to go. We’ve got a lot of work to do. But I really think Jason is the right guy for this job, and I know Jerry thinks the same thing. I certainly see Jason being a big part of our future.”

The Cowboys are battling the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFL East title. Dallas will win the division with wins in each of its last three games.
