Report: Chargers tell Rivers he won’t be traded
The Sports Xchange
The San Diego Chargers have told quarterback Philip Rivers that he won’t be traded, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
That report Thursday follows word Wednesday that the Chargers and Rivers are discussing a contract extension. FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Mike Garafolo reported the Chargers met with Rivers’ agent late last week with the intent of extending his current deal.
Rivers would become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season without an extension. His future with the Chargers has been in question since reports surfaced that he declined a contract extension because he is wary of the team’s possible move to Los Angeles.
In addition, there had been speculation that the Chargers might try to move up in the draft to select Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. The Tennessee Titans draft No. 2 overall, and some have speculated that the Chargers might try to trade Rivers to the Titans in a package that nets San Diego the No. 2 pick. The Chargers select 17th overall in the draft, which will take place in Chicago beginning Thursday night.
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said last week “it’s our plan and intent” for Rivers to remain the team’s quarterback.
“It’s the same thing I’ve said for the last four months: Philip’s our quarterback and it’s our plan and intent that he’s our quarterback well into the future,” Telesco said.
Rivers, 33, has been the Chargers’ quarterback ever since replacing Drew Brees in 2006, setting numerous club records and approaching many of Dan Fouts’ marks while climbing the NFL charts. The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback has thrown for 36,655 yards, 252 touchdowns and 122 interceptions. His 95.7 rating ranks sixth in NFL history.
