Report: Bears already regret Cutler deal
The Chicago Bears have “buyer’s remorse” over the contract they gave to quarterback Jay Cutler before the season, according to NFL Network.
The Bears gave Cutler, 31, a seven-year, $126 million deal in which $54 million is guaranteed.
Cutler has a strong arm but has had problems turning the ball over throughout his career. The Bears even considered benching him two weeks ago against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers two weeks ago because of his struggles.
Jimmy Clausen is the Bears’ backup to Cutler but does not appear to be a threat to take the job after coach Marc Trestman defended Cutler last week.
“Jay is our quarterback,” Trestman said. “If he’s available to play, he’s going to play. Jimmy is continuing to work in the offense, and he practices. We certainly like having him on our football team, but as we get ready for New Orleans next week, Jay will get the reps and he’ll be playing.”
The Bears fell to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday and take on the Saints next Sunday.
Cutler has thrown for 3,446 yards with 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions this season. He has thrown two interceptions in six of those games. In his nine-year NFL career, he has thrown for 27,383 yards with 181 touchdowns and 127 interceptions.
