Released QB McCown drawing interest

Published

on

Josh McCown was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but plans to continue playing in the NFL.

The 35-year-old quarterback signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Buccaneers to be the team’s starter in 2014 but he struggled to stay healthy. He started 11 games with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Tampa Bay owns the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and is widely expected to select a quarterback in the first round for the second time since 2009 (Josh Freeman, Kansas State). According to NFLDraftScout.com, Florida State’s Jameis Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota are the top two prospects at the position and likely to be drafted in the top five in April.

McCown could be popular on the open market considering the options in free agency are average at best barring trade options that could include Mike Glennon of the Buccaneers and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

The Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets are among the possible suitors for McCown.

Veterans scheduled to be available on the open market in March include Mark Sanchez, Michael Vick, Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett.
