Redskins to interview Phillips for DC opening

Published

on

The Washington Redskins plan to interview Wade Phillips this week for the vacant defensive coordinator position, according to reports.

Former defensive coordinator Jim Haslett and the Redskins mutually agreed to part ways last Wednesday after the team’s 4-12 season. Haslett finished his fifth season in Washington and first under head coach Jay Gruden.

Phillips last coached from 2011 to 2013 as defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans, closing out the final three games of the 2013 season as interim head coach. He was out of football this past season.

Phillips, 67, has been the head coach for the Denver Broncos (1993-94), Buffalo Bills (1998-2000) and Dallas Cowboys (2007-10), but running defenses has been his most successful role.

Phillips utilizes a 3-4 alignment, the same type of defensive scheme that the Redskins have used the last five seasons. He has served as defensive coordinator for Texans, San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Broncos, Bills and Atlanta Falcons.

Phillips’ son, Wes, coaches Washington’s tight ends.

The Redskins reportedly were blocked from speaking with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz about their opening.

According to the Washington Post, the Redskins are expected to interview San Francisco defensive backs coach Ed Donatell and San Diego linebackers coach Joe Barry for the DC opening sometime this week. Current Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris also is expected to receive consideration for the position.
