Redskins Take Brandon Scherff- Full NFL Draft Analysis

The Washington Redskins picked a guard in the Top 5. Find out what our experts think of the pick.

The Washington Redskins decided to sure up their offensive line in the hopes to keep quarterback Robert Griffin, III upright as they selected former Iowa offensive tackle Brandon Scherff.  Football Insiders has all of your analysis for this and every other pick.

“The Washington Redskins are prepared to move forward with Robert Griffin III for now at least. In order for him to be successful, the Redskins must find a way to protect him. Brandon Scherff is the best offensive linemen in the draft. He’s an outstanding 6-foot-5, 319 pounds. Considering that brute size and his terrific use of hands, it’s very difficult to move him at the line of scrimmage. Scherff is also pretty athletic for his size.”- Mark Gunnels

“Our first shocker! I can’t believe Washington also passed on Leonard Williams. Did I miss something coming out about his character in the last couple days that all these teams know about? It’s a good pick for the Redskins who have a lot of needs. They certainly had to upgrade the offensive line at some point to keep Robert Griffin III from getting killed and improve their running game immediately. No matter if he stays at tackle or moves inside to guard, Brandon Scherff is a sure-fire upgrade to Washington’s front five. This, to me, is a reinvestment in RGIII and keeping him on the field more than anything else. Good move in that respect.” – Devon Jeffreys

“Brandon Scherff is easily the best offensive lineman in this draft. But Leonard Williams is still the best player in this draft. And not on a team yet. Some team outside the top 5 is going to feel very fortunate.” – Alex Hickey

“First, the Redskins brought in new offensive line coach Bill Callahan from the Cowboys. Now, they are following Dallas’ blueprint of building from the inside out. Schreff is a nasty, physical and versatile linemen, capable of upgrading any position on Washington’s offensive line. He will give Robert Griffin III a chance to make more plays from the pocket while also opening some bigger holes for Alfred Morris. As an added bonus, the Redskins just took the player the Giants wanted most at No. 10.”- Michael Lombardo

“You can argue that the Washington Redskins needed a lot more help on the offensive front than they do on the defensive front, but for as good as Brandon Sherff is, they might end up being disappointed that they passed on Leonard Williams. Scherff immediately upgrades the Washington offensive line and should be a day one starter at guard or tackle.”- Pat Donovan

“The NFL is a copycat league, right?  The Redskins are following the Cowboys model, but taking a guard at No. 5 overall seems a bit aggressive to me.  I would’ve rather gone with Leonard Williams or even a Vic Beasley and I believe that would have equated to more value for the selection.”- Charlie Bernstein
