Redskins sign QB Mason, waived AWOL Halliday
The Sports Xchange
The Washington Redskins signed former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Hutson Mason to replace Connor Halliday, who was waived after unexpectedly leaving the team over the weekend.
The Redskins also signed veteran linebacker Alonzo Highsmith and undrafted rookies offensive tackle Tovar Allen, defensive lineman Daryl Waud and linebackers Houston Bates and Dasman McCullum. Offensive tackle Brey Cook, linebacker James Gayle (injured), linebacker LaKendrick Ross and wide receiver Tyler Rutenbeck were waived.
Halliday left a voicemail on coach Jay Gruden’s phone on the eve of minicamp saying he was heading home, according to The Washington Post.
Halliday threw for 90 touchdowns while at Washington State and more than 11,300 yards. But a season-ending injury hurt his draft stock and he was passed over.
The Post said Halliday was the only quarterback believed to have visited Redskins Park for an interview prior to the draft.
Mason becomes the fourth quarterback on the roster, joining Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy.
