Redskins hope to reboot identity against Seahawks
ASHBURN, Va. — When the Washington Redskins kick off Monday night against visiting Seattle, it will be 11 days since they were whipped in the same stadium by the New York Giants.
After the 45-11 loss, Washington coach Jay Gruden gave his players three straight and four out of five days off before returning to regular work on Thursday. So it was almost like a bye week.
“You can’t let one game define your season,” ninth-year defensive end Kedric Golston said. “You can’t let the Jacksonville game (a 41-10 win in Week 2) define you and you can’t let the New York game define you.
“Somewhere in the middle you have to find that consistency. When bad things happen, you kinda gotta stay the course and not let emotions overwhelm you. You have to be able to weather that and figure out a way to win.”
Safety Ryan Clark, a 13-year veteran, said the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks (2-1), who are coming off an actual bye week, must be looking forward to meeting the 1-3 Redskins.
“If I’m Seattle, I’m licking my chops watching this film, expecting to come to FedEx and blow this team out,” Clark said. “So for us, this will be the week that we find out about ourselves.
“I’m excited about the challenge. I’m excited to see what we’re made of. If you have to change what you’re doing because of how last week went, you weren’t working hard enough before. As a team, we don’t have to figure out how not to lose games, we’ve got to figure out ways to win. Until you get a winner’s mentality and figure out this what do to be successful, not what you do to avoid tragedy, then we’ll become better.”
Quarterback Kirk Cousins, who threw four interceptions and lost a fumble against the Giants, is focused on being better against the Seahawks.
“Human nature would say you’re going to be a little more careful, but if you do that I think you get in trouble more than you help yourself,” Cousins said. “You have to check your ego at the door when you walk in the film room and say to the coaches, ‘Let’s make sure this never happens again. However you have to coach me, be hard on me to make sure that it gets through.”
The last time the Redskins faced the Seahawks was in a wild-card game in 2012. Washington jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter, but quarterback Robert Griffin III re-injured his right knee on the second touchdown drive and the offense collapsed. Seattle rallied behind fellow rookie quarterback Russell Wilson to take a 21-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Griffin tore his ACL and LCL shortly thereafter and he and the Redskins were done. Griffin is out again now with a dislocated left ankle, leaving Cousins, who split two verdicts against Wilson when he was starring at Michigan State and the latter was doing the same at Wisconsin in 2011, to run Washington’s offense against the elite Seattle defense that has Wilson’s back.
NOTES: CB Richard Crawford and S Jamarca Sanford were signed Sept. 29. … CB Tracy Porter (hamstring) did not practice Thursday. … S Trenton Robinson (high ankle) is out. … TE Niles Paul (concussion) returned to limited practice and could play Monday. … Others in limited practice Thursday included OT Trent Williams (patellar inflammation, right knee), G Shawn Lauvao (knee), TE Jordan Reed (hamstring), DE Kedric Golston (groin) and LB Akeem Jordan (knee).
