Redskins hire Scot McLoughan as GM

Published

on

Scot McLoughan agreed to become general manager of the Washington Redskins after a year out of the NFL to deal with personal issues.

McLoughan, who recently told ESPN the Magazine he battled alcoholism as a travel-weary area scout and in administrative roles with the 49ers and Seahawks, will work under team president Bruce Allen.

The Redskins have all of their own draft choices for the first time in several years and Allen said last week the team plans to be active in free agency with more than $20 million to work with under the salary cap.

One decision that will impact the team immediately is a March option on quarterback Robert Griffin III, whose one-year relationship with head coach Jay Gruden was acrimonious, at least on the surface. Gruden blamed media for any strain in the player-coach relationship.

Griffin is under contract next season but the Redskins must exercise an option to retain him for 2016.

McLoughan left the Seahawks last year but started his own scouting service and is up to speed on the 2015 draft class. The Redskins have the fifth overall pick in the draft.
