Redskins’ Gruden: McCoy will start if Griffin remains out
Colt McCoy will take over from Kirk Cousins as Washington’s starting quarterback if Robert Griffin III remains out, coach Jay Gruden announced Monday.
If Griffin is not completely healthy, McCoy will start next Monday against the Dallas Cowboys, Gruden said.
Griffin suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 and has been out since. He returned to practice in limited work last week and is expected to practice again this week.
Cousins played well in his first two starts, throwing five touchdown passes and just one interception. But in the four games since, he has tossed eight interceptions vs. just five touchdowns.
McCoy replaced him Sunday against Tennessee and completed 11 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown while leading Washington to a 19-17 win.
Washington drafted Cousins in the fourth round in 2012, the same year the team traded up to pick Griffin with the second overall pick. Cousins had played well enough to make some speculate that he could replace Griffin permanently, but a four-interception game in a 45-14 loss to the New York Giants and a three-interception game in a 30-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals all but ended that talk.
The Redskins had lost four straight games until McCoy rallied them to victory against the Titans on Sunday. He threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon and then led Washington on a 76-yard drive to the winning field with no time left.
McCoy, a 2010 third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, signed with Washington in April. He spent last year as the backup in San Francisco.
