Redskins bench QB Cousins; McCoy opens third quarter
LANDOVER, Md. — Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins was benched to start the second half of Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans in favor of Colt McCoy, who responded with a 70-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Pierre Garcon.
McCoy’s touchdown gave Washington a 13-10 lead.
Cousins was 10 of 16 passing with an interception in the first half, and his second-half issues were undeniable, even for head coach Jay Gruden. He entered Sunday’s game with six touchdowns and 12 interceptions in the second half of games.
Gruden was steadfast in his support of Cousins and said Wednesday there was no plan to play McCoy, who opened the season as the Redskins’ third-team quarterback behind Cousins and Robert Griffin III.
Griffin III returned to practice this week to participate in individual drills and one day of scout team workouts which Gruden summarized and “handing off and getting out of there.”
