Ravens renovate singed secondary
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens are shaking things up in the secondary heading into Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans
They cut cornerbacks Dominique Franks and Chykie Brown following a disastrous performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers where the defense allowed six touchdown passes to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
And they claimed cornerback Danny Gorrer off waivers from the Detroit Lions and promoted rookie cornerback Tramain Jacobs from the practice squad.
Gorrer, who had a previous stint with the Ravens, is expected to start Sunday against the Titans.
“Some of the language is still the same; he tweaked it a little bit, but everything is basically still the same,” Gorrer said. “I’m trying to hit the ground running and trying to get caught up on everything.
“This business is crazy, but my job is to hit the ground running and pick up everything as fast as possible to get out there and help this team get back to winning. I’ve just got to weather the storm.”
“He’s been here before, so he has a lot of recall from our system,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh of Gorrer, who played for the Ravens in 2010 and 2011 before being cut in 2012 when the Ravens signed safety James Ihedigbo. “He’s also been in our system since the whole season in Detroit. A few things are called differently maybe, but he knows the defense and we’ll get him up to speed on the things that are different. It’s pretty unique, and it’s a good situation for us.”
In five NFL seasons, Gorrer, 28, has 38 tackles and one interception with two career starts. He’s also played for the New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and had seven tackles this season for the Lions.
Gorrer is hoping to help the Ravens engineer a turnaround.
“It takes one game to turn things around,” Gorrer said. “Win this weekend, nobody will even talk about what’s been going on. That’s my job and that’s the team focus right now, to get back on track to winning football and playing Baltimore football.”
NOTES: CB Jimmy Smith remains sidelined with a sprained left foot and isn’t expected to play Sunday. … WR Michael Campanaro remains out with a pulled hamstring. … G Marshal Yanda didn’t practice due to a left knee injury, but is expected to play Sunday. … C Jeremy Zuttah (ankle) didn’t practice due to a left knee injury, but is expected to play Sunday.
