Ravens place TE Pitta on PUP

As expected, the Baltimore Ravens have placed tight end Dennis Pitta on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

They made the move Friday, also putting defensive back Terrence Brooks on PUP.

Pitta, 30, is entering his sixth season but has played in just seven games the past two because of hip injuries. He is still not recovered from a fractured and dislocated right hip.

Pitta has not been cleared medically and coach John Harbaugh said it’s not a foregone conclusion.

“No. 1, he has to be cleared by the doctors. And No. 2, he has to decide if he wants to play because obviously there will be some risk involved,” Harbaugh said last month. “He hasn’t been cleared by the doctors.”

Pitta signed a five-year, $32 million deal after emerging in 2012 as quarterback Joe Flacco’s go-to receiver. He caught 61 passes and seven touchdowns in the Ravens’ Super Bowl season.

The Ravens lost Owen Daniels to the Denver Broncos in free agency this year, but they drafted Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams in the second round.

In May, Pitta said he was hopeful about playing in the NFL again.

“I’m optimistic,” Pitta said. “I feel good. But obviously it’s a process. I have an idea in mind of where I’d like to be in a couple months; but, at the same time, you don’t know. I know what it felt like to do this one time. I’ve never known what it felt like to do it twice.

“I knew I would make an attempt to come back. This is what I love to do. Injuries are part of this game and you have to try to overcome them the best you can. You always want to leave this game on your own terms.”
