Ravens CB Webb fails conditioning test at camp’s start

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens starting cornerback Lardarius Webb didn’t pass his conditioning test on his initial try Wednesday at the start of training camp and was placed on the non-football injury list.

Webb will not be able to practice until he passes the running test, a series of timed six 150-yard runs.

“The conditioning test measures anaerobic conditioning,” head coach John Harbaugh said. “It measures the ability to recover, to get your heart rate up and recover. Webby is in really good shape in a lot of different ways. I can see it in the way he moves in the weight room, but he’s not in the kind of anaerobic shape he needs to be in to come out here and practice.

“The idea is that if I go play after play after play and I begin to get fatigued, I can’t move the way I need to move. I’m going to have a fatigue type of injury. That’s why it’s part of the physical, and that’s why we don’t allow guys to practice until they’re anaerobically in condition.”

Webb was “disappointed he didn’t make it,” and “will be very determined to make it through,” Harbaugh said.

“It’s always a big deal. It was a big deal when (wide receiver) Jacoby (Jones) didn’t pass it (in 2013). It was a big deal when (defensive tackle) Haloti (Ngata) didn’t pass it (in 2012). It’s always a big deal. You want to see guys pass it.”

Meanwhile, veteran outside linebacker Terrell Suggs has lost some weight since the spring but remains over his usual playing weight.

“I totally feel a lot different from the last time I was up here,” he said. “I can be totally honest with you. I feel great, and we’re ready to get out here and work at camp. … We shed some (weight) — a lot. I’m not quite at the weight ()where I need to be), but we’re at good fighting weight. We’re here for camp, and we’re going to use this time to shed some more. It’s going to be hot out here, so we’re going to be looking forward to it.”
