Rams want Bradford to take pay cut
St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is due nearly $13 million in 2015, but the team would like the oft-injured quarterback to restructure his deal.
Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick in 2010, has missed 25 of the past 32 games because of torn knee ligaments. In five seasons, he has missed 31 total games.
This is the final season of Bradford’s rookie contract that was worth a maximum of $86 million.
With a $12.985 million salary in 2015, the Rams are likely to recommend a deal packed with performance-based incentives.
If Bradford balks, the Rams could let the 27-year-old walk.
Releasing him outright would save the team $12.985 million out of an overall cap count of $16.58 million. However, the Rams are not in position to push a backup into the starting role with great confidence.
In 2014, undrafted third-stringer Austin Davis was elevated to the No. 1 role when Bradford was injured in the preseason. Backup Shaun Hill wasn’t available due to a muscle strain.
A more pressing decision in needed on left tackle Jake Long, who has missed 10 games in the past two seasons because of knee injuries. His $4 million base salary for 2015 is guaranteed if he’s on the roster in mid-March.
