Rams add Fairley to loaded D-line
Defensive tackle Nick Fairley signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the St. Louis Rams on Friday.
With Fairley in the mix, the Rams feature five first-round picks on their defensive line — ends Chris Long and Robert Quinn and tackles Michael Brockers and Aaron Donald, along with Fairley, a first-rounder in 2011 who played 46 games with the Detroit Lions. The Auburn standout was the 13th overall pick.
The Lions declined the fifth-year option on his contract and made no attempt to bring him back after losing defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and trading for Haloti Ngata.
Fairley was injured in Week 8 and did not practice again until January when the Lions were preparing for their wild-card playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said last month that Fairley’s knee injury would not be a long-term issue.
Fairley’s deal includes $2.5 million in incentives, per reports, which could give him a chance to make $7.5 million in 2015 and then return to free agency in March 2016. One reason the Rams might’ve preferred a short-term deal — Fairley has struggled to maintain a healthy playing weight for much of his pro career.
In addition to signing Fairley, the Rams signed outside linebacker Akeem Ayers and acquired quarterback Nick Foles, who was introduced to media Friday at the team’s Earth City, Mo., headquarters.
