Raiders sign RB Richardson

Published

on

Running back Trent Richardson landed with his third team in his brief NFL career, signing as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday.

Richardson, who was released last week by the Indianapolis Colts an unproductive 1 1/2 seasons, received a two-year, $3.9 million contract, according to the NFL Network.

Last season, Richardson played in 15 games and started 12 for the Colts, finishing with 519 yards rushing on 159 carries for a 3.3-yard average. The 24-year-old lost his starting job during the season and was suspended during the postseason.

Richardson joined the Colts in October 2013 after the team gave up a first-round draft pick in a deal with the Cleveland Browns

In 46 games and 37 starts for the Colts and Browns, Richardson has 2,032 rushing yards on 614 carries and 17 touchdowns and 113 receptions for 912 yards and two touchdowns. His best season came in 2012 with the Browns when he ran for 950 yards on 267 carries (breaking Jim Brown’s team rookie rushing record of 942 yards set in 1957) and 22 touchdowns.

The Raiders hope Richardson will compete for the running back job that’s up for grabs after Maurice Jones-Drew retired and Darren McFadden left last week for the Dallas Cowboys.

Richardson, who was the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft out of Alabama, will join third-year running back Latavius Murray as contenders for the opening in 2015. Murray rushed for 424 yards on 82 carries (5.2-yard average) in his first two NFL seasons.
