ALAMEDA, Calif. — When Oakland Raider offensive lineman Donald Penn scored on three-yard touchdown catch against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, it was the third of his career and the second time with the same play against the same team.

It was a high point of a game in which the Raiders upset the visiting 49ers, 24-13. Penn, who is all of the 340 pounds that shows on the roster, celebrated the score with a Lambeau-type leap into the Raiders’ infamous Black Hole.

He obviously didn’t think that one through because he went into the stands with the ball and came out without it. So his souvenir from that score will be video replays of the catch and his leap into the Black Hole Burglary.

Both of Penn’s previous touchdowns, one in 2010 and another last year, were for one yard.

Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Olson first put in the play for Penn when they were both with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010. And the 49ers were the first victim.

“I was kind of nervous because (49ers defensive tackle) Justin Smith was there the last time, and I thought he was going to know,” Penn said. “It could have been a better pass from the quarterback, but I’m not going to say anything.”

Quarterback Derek Carr admitted he almost took too much off the ball.

“He was so open, I just threw it so easy and I was like, ‘Don’t drop it!’ And then he got mad at me of course because he got hit. He wanted me to know that he has hands and to throw it harder the next time.”

The leap into the Black Hole was actually a big item on Penn’s bucket list.

“I grew up a Raiders fan so it was my dream to jump into the Black Hole,” he said.

–Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera had a career day against the 49ers, catching seven passes for 109 yards and a 5-yard touchdown reception. He also had 27-yard catches on each of the Raiders’ 80-yard touchdown drives in the second half.

The touchdown reception was tightly contested and Rivera simply won the battle for the ball against Leon McFadden.

“If it’s a guy smaller than me, I just jump and make the catch,” Rivera said. “We practice it every day and it finally happened in the game.”

As for most of the receptions, Rivera was usually wide open, often, correctly reading windows in zones or simply left uncovered.

One third down play, Rivera correctly sat on a route which left an open window for a first down throw from Carr on a third down play.

“He saw the guy running with him, I was trying to wave to him. I don’t know if he saw me, but he did a great job,” Carr said. “That’s our chemistry building. He knew if he stopped I could pin it on him and he could make a play.”

–With the 49ers in a desperation mode, free safety Charles Woodson intercepted a low Kaepernick pass with a dive for his third interception of the season and the 59th of his career.

Woodson was tied with Emmitt Thomas at 58 interceptions and moves into 11th place in NFL history. Thomas is a defensive backs coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I haven’t met him, but Al Harris, who was a teammate of mine in Green Bay, is a great friend of Emmitt so I’ve heard a number of great things about him,” Woodson said. “He loves him to death. I’ll just try keep climbing that ladder.”
