Raiders close to a one-year stadium extension

Published

on

Raiders owner Mark Davis wants to keep the franchise in Oakland but admits he has no idea where the team will be playing in 2016.

Davis expects to sign a one-year extension with the Coliseum shortly. He said Friday that an agreement has been reached and just awaiting formal approval from the city, county and NFL before the team can officially sign it.

However, the situation becomes uncertain after next season.

“We are trying to get something done here, so we’re signing another one-year extension,” Davis told reporters following the news conference to announce the hiring of head coach Jack Del Rio. “Plus our fans proved to us that we should be here.

“We want to be here. We’re not using any other place, city or whatever, as leverage. It’s not that way. It’s known that no matter what we do here, it will not be as valuable or economically as great for the Raiders as if we went somewhere else. That’s known. But we still want to be here.”

The Raiders play in one of the oldest facilities in the league. The Coliseum opened in 1966 and underwent a renovation in 1995, but the outdated stadium still has a variety of issues.

Oakland is the only NFL franchise to share facilities with a major league baseball team — forcing the Raiders to play their early home schedule on a field partially covered by a dirt infield.

Davis remains hopeful of getting a long-term deal in Oakland. He said the team is willing to spend $300 million, with another $200 million coming from the NFL — leaving the team about $500 million shy of what it needs to get a new stadium built.
