QB Wilson’s agent pens letter to Seahawks
The Sports Xchange
The agent for quarterback Russell Wilson sent a 16-page letter to the Seahawks stating his position on the contract negotiations between the team and Wilson.
Mark Rogers said last month Wilson was in no rush to sign a new deal and that he didn’t mind playing the 2015 season, the last year in his rookie contract, without a long-term guarantee.
“Russell is under contract with the Seahawks,” Rodgers said in a radio interview. “He absolutely would be fine playing his fourth year under the contract he signed coming out and then moving on from there. I don’t feel any particular crunch on time or any real particular deadlines.”
Guaranteed money isn’t the only hangup in negotiations, but it’s a major factor. Fifty quarterbacks have contracts with more guaranteed money than Wilson, ESPN reported Tuesday.
Cam Newton and Ben Roethlisberger have matching guarantees in the two biggest deals for quarterbacks signed since the end of the 2014 season, which ended with Wilson in the Super Bowl with the Seahawks for the second consecutive year.
Wilson is scheduled to make $1.54 million in 2015 as a third-round draft choice out of Wisconsin in 2012.
Newton’s deal could be worth up to $103.8 million over five years.
The franchise tag for Wilson in 2016 could reach or exceed $25 million if talks fail to produce a long-term deal.
Seattle is focusing on other expiring deals including the contract of middle linebacker Bobby Wagner.
