QB-needy Jets pick up Josh Johnson
The Sports Xchange
With Geno Smith sidelined by a broken jaw, the New York Jets are reconfiguring their quarterback roster.
On Thursday, they signed Josh Johnson and cut Jake Heaps.
Johnson, a seven-year veteran cut by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, joins a Jets QB group that includes Ryan Fitzpatrick, rookie Bryce Petty and recently signed Matt Flynn.
With Smith out 6-10 weeks due to a broken jaw suffered in a locker room incident, the Jets signed Flynn on Aug. 19. But he has been hindered by a hamstring injury.
The 29-year-old Johnson began his career with the Buccaneers in 2008 and started five games for Tampa Bay in four seasons. He then spent a year each wth the Cleveland Browns, Bengals and San Francisco 49ers. He did not get into a game last year with the 49ers. He had returned to the Bengals in April.
In seven NFL seasons, Johnson has completed 96 of 177 passes for 1,042 yards and five touchdowns with 10 interceptions.
