Pryor making strides as a receiver for Browns
The Sports Xchange
BEREA, Ohio — Former quarterback Terrelle Pryor is making an impression on the Cleveland Browns as he tries to convert to wide receiver. He took some reps with the first team on Sunday.
Veteran wide receiver Dwayne Bowe is convinced Pryor will make the switch successfully.
“There’s no doubt. No doubt,” Bowe said. “He’s extremely talented. He has the work ethic, and he’s a team player.
“I have never seen a quarterback transition from quarterback to receiver in two practices and do as good as he did — ever. I was telling him in meetings, ‘Just stick with it. Be patient. It’s going to be hard at first.’ But he’s making it look so easy that he’s starting to scare me. He’s going to be really, really good.”
Pryor, who is 6 feet 5 and 232 pounds, was a third-round supplemental pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2011 out of Ohio State. He played quarterback with the Raiders for three years, appearing in 15 games with 10 starts. Since then, he has failed to stick in Seattle, Kansas City and Cincinnati as a quarterback.
–Defensive end Billy Winn suffered the first serious setback of training camp when he sustained a right knee and ankle injury on Saturday, the first day the Browns were in pads. Winn was hurt on an inside running drill. He will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, the Browns said.
Winn is competing with rookie Xavier Cooper for playing time.
–Tashaun Gipson is starting at free safety. Gipson worked out on his own during OTAs because he was unhappy with his contract situation. He signed a one-year tender just before June minicamp began and then missed the minicamp with a hamstring injury.
“I feel good,” Gipson said. “I’m in the best shape of my life. I feel good and feel fast. I’m just excited about this season.
“I’m just ready to go out and show them that I’m the best safety in the NFL. That’s the goal I’m setting for myself this year, and that’s what I’m going to be able to prove this year.”
Gipson led the AFC with six interceptions last year despite missing the last five games with a knee injury.
–The Browns signed running backs Timothy Flanders and Jalen Parmele and waived wide receiver Kevin Cone and defensive back Brandon Stephens.
Flanders signed with the New Orleans Saints as undrafted free agent in 2014.
Parmele was a sixth-round draft pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2008. In in 36 games, he has 187 rushing yards and seven receptions for 60 yards.
Cone spent the final 11 weeks of the 2014 season on the Browns’ practice squad. Stephens had been signed in May after the team’s rookie minicamp.
