Pierre-Paul, Giants discuss roster status
The Sports Xchange
Representatives for defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul are planning to huddle with New York Giants team officials on Tuesday to discuss financial obstacles that must be cleared to pave the way for his return to the team.
Pierre-Paul took a physical Monday and turned over full medical information to the Giants, who met with the 26-year-old for the first time since the July 4 fireworks accident that cost him his right index finger and fractured his right thumb.
Pierre-Paul had been designated in March as the franchise player for the Giants, but he didn’t sign the $14.813 million tender and had previously not agreed to meet with team doctors for the Giants as the team attempted to assess his status for 2015.
Pierre-Paul’s agents insist he could be ready to play before late October.
The Giants might prefer to slide Pierre-Paul to the Non Football Injury List (NFI), which affords the team the ability to withhold pay for the first six games before the player is eligible to return.
Monday’s physical and videotaped workout submitted by Pierre-Paul are meant to prove his health. Pierre-Paul would like to be on the field before Week 7, but might require his hand in a full cast or protective sleeve, a variable the Giants have to consider before making a final call on his roster status.
The Giants open the regular season Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.
