Peyton Manning: Next year no given

Published

DENVER — Peyton Manning said he must process Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts before the Denver Broncos quarterback decides whether this was his final NFL season.

“My mindset right now is just disappointment after today’s game,” Manning said. “I kind of need to process this game and we’ll meet tomorrow, kind of need to process this game, so I’m disappointed right now.”

Asked again if he plans to play in 2015, Manning was noncommittal.

“Yeah, I guess I just can’t give that simple answer. I’m processing it. I can’t say that. I could not say that,” he said.

Manning, 38, lost for the ninth time in a playoff opener and completed only six passes that traveled more than five yards. The No. 2 seed Broncos, who went to the Super Bowl last season but lost to the Seattle Seahawks, were bounced in the AFC divisional playoffs, setting in motion an offseason that could bring significant changes to Denver.

“It doesn’t matter when in the playoffs you lose,” Manning said. “It’s always disappointing.”

Offensive coordinator Adam Gase’s future is likely as a head coach. He is a candidate for multiple openings in the NFL with five vacancies remaining as of Sunday night.

Six starters, including tight end Julius Thomas and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, are eligible for free agency.

Broncos head coach John Fox was asked if Manning was healthy, a regular topic as Denver framed its late-season offensive changes as a commitment to the running game.

“It would be a better question to ask him,” Fox said. “But, he’s definitely healthy enough to play the game.”

Manning is owed $19.1 million for 2015. If he retires, the Broncos would face a $5 million cap charge but realize a significant overall savings. They would also be turning over the reins, presumably, to Brock Osweiler.
