CLEVELAND — Before Chargers kicker Josh Lambo kicked the game-winning field goal from 34 yards he missed from 39 yards. The miss didn’t count, however, because Cleveland Browns ninth-year cornerback Tramon Williams jumped offside attempting to anticipate the snap and block the kick. Head coach Mike Pettine did not fault Williams.

“I’m not going to say anything but thanks for the effort,” Pettine said.

The play rekindled thoughts of the 2002 opener against Kansas City when linebacker Dwayne Rudd, thinking the game was over, threw his helmet skidding across the field. He was penalized and Morten Andersen of the Chiefs kicked the game-winning field goal with no time on the clock.

–Rookie running back Duke Johnson caught nine passes for 84 yards. One reception went 34 yards for his first NFL touchdown. It was the highest reception total for a Browns running back since 2002 and just one shy of the team record for a running back originally set by Earnest Byner in 1986.

Notes: Wide receiver Brian Hartline left the game against the Chargers in the first quarter with a rib injury and a thigh contusion. X-rays on Hartline’s ribs were negative, but he did not return. On Monday, Pettine said the thigh bruise could keep Hartline out of practice early in the week. … Safety Tashaun Gipson was battling a groin injury when the game began. He left the game with an ankle injury in the third quarter and did not return. He could be limited in practice on Wednesday. … Running back Shaun Draughn missed practice Thursday and Friday last week with a back injury. He played against the Chargers but aggravated the injury in the third quarter and did not return.
