Veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne requested and was granted his release from the New England Patriots on Saturday, ending a brief stint with the team.

The Patriots also placed receiver Brandon LaFell on the physically-unable-to-perform list and released running back Jonas Gray.

The Patriots also cut tight end Asante Cleveland, linebacker Darius Fleming, cornerback Robert McClain, defensive lineman Zach Moore and wide receiver Jalen Saunders. The team had recently traded for both Cleveland and Saunders.

Also waived were defensive backs Daxton Swanson, Justin Coleman and Brandon King and linebacker Xzavier Dickson.

Wayne, who spent 14 years with the Indianapolis Colts, is expected to retire. He had signed with the Patriots on Aug. 25.

LaFell missed the preseason while recovering from a foot injury. He is eligible to return Oct. 25.

Gray seemed like a breakout star last November, when he rushed for 199 yards and four touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts. But he quickly fell out of favor with coach Bill Belichick, and his lack of speed was evident this preseason.
