Patriots land LB Bostic
The Sports Xchange
The New England Patriots confirmed Tuesday the acquisition of linebacker Jonathan Bostic in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
No terms of the contract were disclosed by the Patriots, but the Bears announced earlier that they received an undisclosed draft pick, which ESPN reported to be a sixth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
The Patriots released running back Travaris Cadet in another roster move.
The 24-year-old Bostic’s contract expires after this season. The 2013 second-round draft pick was the Bears’ leading tackler last season but was inactive for the first three games this year.
The Bears switched to a 3-4 defense under new coach John Fox this season and Bostic wasn’t comfortable in that system and lost additional practice time because of a back issue. He then developed an ankle injury in preseason that kept him sidelined for the first three weeks of the regular season.
Bostic played in 29 games and started 17 in his two seasons with the Bears, accumulating 203 tackles, two sacks, one interception, four passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
In 13 games and eight starts last season, Boston led the Bears with 127 tackles and three passes defensed.
Changing teams with Bostic was veteran defensive end Jared Allen, who was traded by the Bears to the Carolina Panthers on Monday.
Cadet, 26, signed as a free agent with the Patriots on March 17 after spending the past three seasons with the New Orleans Saints. He played in one game for New England, catching one pass for 1 yard against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 20.
In 42 NFL games and one start, Cadet has rushed 11 times for 37 yards and had 46 receptions for 346 yards and two touchdowns. He added 1,293 yards on 50 kickoff returns.
