Patriots keep focus on business
Do your job.
It’s one of the tried and true Bill Belichick tenets and a working mantra of the New England Patriots. And the coach would be challenged to find a time when his team was this eager to get back to work after off days Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
While the Patriots’ coaching staff was preparing a game plan to install before the team departs for Arizona on Monday and players were taking advantage of a physical break, the team was embroiled in off-field drama.
Inside the facility in Foxborough, it was business as usual. And the business is beating the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.
“There’s always an element of getting some of the logistical things taken care of early in this week, which is going to be important so we can totally focus on our preparation for the opponent,” said Patriots quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. “Getting used to these (Seahawks) guys and starting to really digest their players, their strengths and weaknesses, the way they play, the schemes they use and really try to dive into that and get very familiar with them here before we begin practicing. Obviously there’s just a lot of excitement and a lot of things we need to do. It will be a busy week and we’re looking forward to it.”
The Patriots are again arriving later than their opponent. Belichick prefers the approach to maintain as much normalcy as possible in a two-week span that is anything but routine.
“The excitement is high, but it’s also more focused,” wide receiver Julian Edelman said of the Patriots’ vibe as Super Bowl prep begins. “You have guys that have been to this game; guys that haven’t been to this game. You have guys that won the game; you have guys that haven’t won the game when they’ve been there. Everyone is kind of just focused and trying to get ready to prepare for this team. We’re playing the champs.”
Coaches admit they pried cornerback Brandon Browner and defensive tackle Alan Branch for information, trade secrets and scheme-related intel gleaned from their time in Seattle. Before a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs late last season, Browner was the starting cornerback opposite All-Pro Richard Sherman. He’s know the tag-team partner of Darrelle Revis, the Patriots’ All-Pro cover man.
“You’re going to try to obviously exhaust all of your resources to put yourself in the best situation to play that opponent,” Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia said. “Certainly Brandon has some familiarity with them; Alan Branch has some familiarly with them, too.”
One storyline that will be repeated throughout the buildup to the Feb. 1 game in Glendale, Ariz., is Belichick taking on his predecessor with the Patriots, Pete Carroll. Carroll is the only other coach hired by Robert Kraft in his reign as Patriots owner. He was let go in 2000, but went on to great success at Southern Cal before he joined the Seahawks in 2010 and won the Super Bowl last February.
“I like Pete; like him a lot,” said Belichick in the first of tens of questions he’ll likely field on his counterpart before the two share a stage Jan. 30 in a joint press conference two days before the Super Bowl.
On Monday, Carroll admitted facing his former employer is a bit more personal than it might be against another team.
“Pete’s a great football coach. His record speaks for itself,” said Belichick. “I’ve always had a lot of respect for Pete. … They kind of have their way of doing things, but it works very well and Pete’s consistent, he’s got a consistent message. I think he’s coached pretty much the same type of — he has the same type of style and similar type of coaching personality and scheme and just kind of the whole thing for many years now.
“Pete’s a good friend. I sit down and talked with him on many occasions and I really respect what he does (and) how he does it.”
