Patriots decline CB Revis’ $20 million option

Published

on

The New England Patriots will not pick up the $20 million option in cornerback Darrelle Revis’ contract, according to reports Monday.

Exercising the option would have required New England to take a $25 million salary-cap hit.

Revis will become a free agent at 4 p.m. Tuesday barring a new deal with the Patriots before the deadline.

According to ESPN.com, the Patriots are expected to continue talks with Revis about a contract, while the New York Jets have been planning to make a run at Revis should he become a free agent.

The Patriots signed Revis last March for two years and $32 million. Revis, who turns 30 on July 14, returned to top form two seasons after tearing his ACL. He started every game in 2014 and finished with 47 tackles, 14 passes defensed and two interceptions.
