Panthers to start RB Stewart
The Carolina Panthers will start running back Jonathan Stewart for the fourth straight game with DeAngelo Williams listed as probable for Sunday’s NFC South showdown against the Atlanta Falcons.
Williams has missed the last three games for Carolina while dealing with a broken bone in his hand. He has 219 yards on 62 carries in six games this season.
Stewart has rushed for 437 yards in the past four games — more than any other back in the NFL — since Williams was injured in the first half of a loss at Minnesota.
The Panthers (6-8-1) are 3-0 with Stewart starting the past three games. They need to beat the Falcons (6-9) to repeat as NFC South champions and host a playoff game.
Coach Ron Rivera did not want to reveal his running back rotation beyond Stewart starting.
“I’m not going to sit here and divulge what my plan is with my players,” Rivera said Friday. “I don’t want to get up here and tell you exactly what we’re going to do with our players. Why do I want to give the opponent any insight into what we’re going to do?”
