Panthers re-sign QB/WR Webb

Published

on

The Carolina Panthers re-signed Joe Webb to a one-year contract Monday.

Webb signed with the Panthers last year and played wide receiver and special teams while also serving as the No. 3 quarterback behind Cam Newton and Derek Anderson.

“It’s great to be back,” Webb said in a statement released by the team. “We had a great run with the way we finished the season and it felt like home. Everyone had great team chemistry and it felt like a big family. I didn’t know if I could get that somewhere else. I’m excited to keep working with Cam (Newton) and D.A. (Derek Anderson) with Coach (Ken) Dorsey coaching us up.”

Webb played in seven games, catching one pass for 16 yards and making one tackle on special teams. He saw action on special teams in both postseason games for Carolina, adding a special teams tackle.

“Joe gives us continuity at the quarterback position,” coach Ron Rivera said. “He is also a very versatile player. Not only has he played quarterback, but he has played wide receiver and on special teams, and gives us some depth there because of his athleticism and intelligence. We are very excited for him to continue to be part of what we’re trying to build here.”

Webb spent his first four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings after they drafted him in the sixth round in 2010.
