Panthers promote Wilks to assistant head coach

Published

The Carolina Panthers promoted secondary coach Steve Wilks to assistant head coach on Monday.

Wilks has spent the last three seasons with the Panthers. He spent the 2014 season as the team’s secondary coach and pass defense coordinator.

Wilks took over many of the head coaching duties last month on the day that head coach Ron Rivera’s house caught on fire the week of an NFC playoff game. Wilks was the one who told players and staff members when Rivera stayed at home to handle issues from the fire that caused $500,000 in damages.

Wilks will remain the secondary coach where he has been at Carolina since 2012. His unit finished 11th against the pass in 2014 and sixth in 2013. Carolina improved from 24th in the NFL in pass defense in 2011 to 13th in Wilks’ first season.
