Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who was hospitalized with two transverse process fractures in his lower back after being involved in an auto accident Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints.

Newton matched a career best with three touchdowns passes and also ran for one touchdown in the Panthers’ 41-10 victory. He completed 21 of 33 passes for 226 yards and rushed for 83 yards, marking the fourth time in his four-year career that he has had at least 200 passing yards, multiple passing touchdowns, at least 80 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in the same game.

Newton’s status for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is uncertain. He is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell took the AFC offensive honor. He ran 26 times for 185 yards and two touchdowns and caught six passes for 50 yards and another score in a 42-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

New York Giants rookie linebacker Devon Kennard won the NFC defensive award. He had two sacks and forced a fumble which was returned by teammate Markus Kuhn for a touchdown in the Giants’ 36-7 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil took the AFC defensive honor after his 3.5-sack performance against the Miami Dolphins in the 28-13 win. The sacks pushed his total for the season to a league-high 16, which is also a Ravens franchise record.

New England Patriots punter Ryan Allen won the AFC special teams award. In the Patriots’ 23-14 victory over the San Diego Chargers, he punted five times for a 49.4 average and placed four of his punts at or inside the opponent’s 13-yard line.

St. Louis Rams return specialist Tavon Austin took the NFC special teams honor. He had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in the 24-0 victory over the Washington Redskins. Austin had three punt returns of more than 25 yards during the game.
