Palmer’s return invigorates Cardinals

Published

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer was confident he would eventually return from the nerve injury he suffered in Week 1.

The frustrating part, however, is that he didn’t know when.

Palmer appears to be fully healthy now. In the three games since his return, he has thrown for 832 yards and six touchdowns. Just as important, he has had only one pass intercepted this season.

Palmer has also been a calming influence in the locker room, one of several veterans who have kept younger players grounded during the 6-1 start.

At the beginning of the season, the Cardinals talked about becoming the first team to play in a Super Bowl in their home stadium. Coach Bruce Arians repeated that goal this week.

But Palmer said the players don’t talk about it.

“We really don’t think about that,” he said. “We’re thinking about the Dallas Cowboys. You don’t want to get ahead of yourself. It’s very easy to do, but we keep having such big games and such quality opponents that you don’t have time to think about anything other than what the Cowboys do on third down, what they do in the red zone, all the different situations that come up.

“You have to be prepared and have to be focused on them and all those other things you can’t worry about and you can’t think about.”

The Cardinals believe they haven’t played up to their potential on offense. Arians is irritated about the number of mental errors that continue to hold the unit back.

“We find a way to win. It’s not always pretty,” he said the Monday after his team beat the Philadelphia Eagles. “It was another game that going back and watching the tape, we had some really good outstanding individual performances, but as a collective offense, defense, and I’ll throw special teams out there also, we had too many malfunctions. The attention to detail has to be better or else it’ll come back and get us.”
