Packers WR Cobb could hit market
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb could take his talents elsewhere this offseason unless the two sides agree to a long-term deal this week.
Cobb will not be given the franchise designation before Monday’s deadline, according to multiple reports, and would become an unrestricted free agent March 10.
He caught 91 passes for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season, mostly as the slot receiver in the Packers’ prolific offense that ranked sixth in the NFL. Cobb also caught 15 passes in the playoffs.
If designated as a franchise player, Cobb would have earned $12.8 million for 2015 unless the two sides could work out a long-term deal.
With the Packers making multiple moves in the days leading up to the deadline, it was expected Cobb’s contract could become a focal point. That is still possible, but the Packers wouldn’t have the guarantee refusal rights available with the franchise marker.
Outside interest in Cobb’s services could be significant.
The Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars have plenty of salary cap space and a definite need for a top receiver. With Demaryius Thomas of the Broncos and All-Pro Dez Bryant of the Cowboys given the franchise tag Monday, Cobb is projected as the top wide receiver in free agency.
The Packers drafted Davante Adams in 2014 and he came on late in the season. Adams also had a breakout game in the playoffs against the Cowboys.
He would be first in line for a bigger role in the offense opposite Jordy Nelson. Nelson led the Packers with 98 receptions for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns.
