Packers have free agents aplenty

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers could fill one side of 11 players on the field with their pending unrestricted free agents.

Topping the list are five starters: receiver Randall Cobb, fullback John Kuhn and right tackle Bryan Bulaga on offense and cornerback Tramon Williams and tackle Letroy Guion on defense.

Cobb is the No. 1 priority for the team to re-sign. Yet, even after a monster season of 91 catches for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns (all career highs), Cobb couldn’t guarantee he would be back with the Packers.

“Of course, I think I’ve made that obvious,” Cobb, 24, said about his desire to return to the team, a day after Green Bay’s season ended with a 28-22 overtime loss at the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game.

“But like I’ve said before, this is a business, you don’t know how it’s going to go, what direction it’s going to go in. So you just have to sit around. Hopefully, I’ve put myself in position where it will handle itself, but only time can tell.”

Bulaga’s outlook is similar with the start of free agency less than two months away. He played all but one game this season after missing all of 2013 because of a knee injury and was integral to what Aaron Rodgers touted as the best offensive line in the quarterback’s 10 years with the team.

“You’d love to keep a good thing together,” Bulaga said. “That’s just the way it is. But this is a business, and we just have to see what happens.”

The Packers have two young prospects on the offensive line who could warrant consideration for a starting spot should the team move on without Bulaga, its first-round draft pick in 2010.

Don Barclay replaced Bulaga at right tackle in the 2013 season, but Barclay suffered a torn ACL in the preseason last year.

JC Tretter, a converted tackle, was in line to open this season as the starting center but sustained a knee injury late in the preseason. That opened the door for rookie Corey Linsley to start the entire season at center.

“That’s why guys have agents and people upstairs (in the team’s front office) negotiate deals,” Bulaga said. “At this point, it’s out of my hands.”
