Packers’ Burnett has no regrets over his slide
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Safety Morgan Burnett, who had two of the Packers’ five sacks of Russell Wilson in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, was taken to task by armchair quarterbacks after Green Bay’s season ended shockingly a game short of Super Bowl XLIX.
Burnett had the last of Green Bay’s four interceptions thrown by Wilson on a pass tipped by intended receiver Jermaine Kearse over the middle. The Packers’ fifth takeaway of the game came with a tad more than five minutes left in the fourth quarter and their 19-7 lead intact.
Interestingly, Burnett decided to give himself up by sliding to the turf right after making the interception at Green Bay’s 39-yard line when it appeared he had a lot of room to run. That the Packers offense promptly went three-and-out and punted the football back to Seattle a minute later without crossing midfield had many questioning Burnett’s decision.
He explained Monday what happened.
“I saw (veteran linebacker) Julius Peppers look at me and give me the ‘no mas’ signal. That means ‘get down,'” Burnett said. “We were just more so concerned about securing the possession of the ball, getting our offense back on the field for another possession.
“I don’t take (anything) back that I did. It’s easy to sit here after it happens and say you should’ve done this or should’ve done that. If the outcome was different, we wouldn’t even be talking about it.”
