Orakpo lost for season; his Redskins career may be over
ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Redskins weren’t a good football team in 2011, but their solid defense included four players who had made Pro Bowls with the Redskins: inside linebacker London Fletcher, outside linebackers Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan and cornerback DeAngelo Hall.
Six weeks into the 2014 campaign and Kerrigan, who’s third in the NFC with 6.5 sacks, is the only one remaining. Fletcher retired after last season. Hall suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 3 at Philadelphia, and Orakpo followed suit with a torn right pectoral muscle Sunday against Tennessee.
The injury capped an incredibly frustrating two months for Orakpo, who had just half a sack after averaging 9.5 during his four full healthy campaigns. And now the three-time Pro Bowl pick is done very prematurely for the second time in three years. He suffered a season-ending torn left pec in Week 2 of 2012, Washington’s only winning and playoff year during his Redskins tenure that began as the 13th overall pick in the 2009 draft.
With Washington having franchised Orakpo last winter after failing to reach agreement on a long-term deal, using its top draft choice (second round) on heir apparent Trent Murphy — who replaced him against the Titans — this injury likely ends the 28-year-old’s Redskins career since he’s unsigned for 2015.
“It’s a major blow,” Gruden said. “His production may not be where people think it should be, but he’s still been playing very good against the run and been disruptive in the passing game. Trent Murphy, who has been a role player, now all of a sudden has to be the starter. That’s a big difference. Trent’s got to step up his game. He’s got to be more physical at the point of attack. We’re playing (on Monday) against the No. 1 rushing offense and … against some very good tackles. He’s going to have to grow up very fast.”
Gruden said that Jackson Jeffcoat, who was recently promoted from the practice squad and made his NFL debut against Tennessee, becomes the leading backup outside linebacker ahead of Gabe Miller.
Only Dexter Manley (91), Charles Mann (82), Monte Coleman (43.5) and Ken Harvey (41.5) have recorded more sacks for the Redskins than Orakpo (40). Gruden said that the Redskins won’t evaluate Orakpo’s future until after the season and after they’ve seen Murphy play extensively.
