OLB Freeney coming back for another season
San Diego’s Dwight Freeney isn’t quite ready to call it a career — at least not yet.
The Chargers outside linebacker and seven-time Pro Bowler told UT-San Diego he has decided to play a 14th season. Where he will play is the big question — Freeney will become an unrestricted free agent next week.
Freeney, 35, is coming off a productive season in which he stayed healthy and led the Chargers wit 40 quarterback hurries.
“I could retire tomorrow and still be happy with what I’ve done in this league,” said Freeney, whose 111.5 career sacks rank 20th all time. “But I think I have a lot in the tank as well. It’s one of those things where I’m going to wait for the right situation to come across the table.
“Hopefully it’s with the Chargers. If they are not interested, obviously, you have to (test) the free agent market and see what team is interested.”
The right situation, he said, is playing for a team that can compete and playing for a team that has a clear role for him.
