OG Mathis reportedly will visit Seahawks

Former Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis reportedly will take a trip to Seattle on Saturday to visit the Seahawks.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the possibility on Thursday night, and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Mathis indeed will follow through on the planned visit with the defending NFC champions.

The trip had been in doubt as Mathis waited on an unknown team’s offer, but he is unlikely to reach an agreement before Saturday, Rapoport reported. The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets reportedly have shown the most interest.

Mathis, cut by the Philadelphia Eagles in June, reportedly has been holding out for at least $5 million a year, which is about what he was slated to be paid in Philadelphia.

Mathis, 33, almost surely would have to settle for less than $5 million with the Seahawks, who have about that much in salary cap space (not counting holdout safety Kam Chancellor’s $4.55 million).

The Seahawks have worked five players at left guard this summer and went into Kansas City on Friday with former starting right tackle Justin Britt at the spot.
