No option for Bears’ McClellin; Bennett on trade block
The Sports Xchange
The Chicago Bears will not pick up the fifth-year option on outside linebacker Shea McClellin, and they reportedly are entertaining trade offers for tight end Martellus Bennett.
General manager Ryan Pace said Wednesday that the team will not exercise the 2016 option on McClellin, their 2012 first-round pick. The option would have cost the team $7.75 million.
McClellin has started 20 games over the past two seasons, but he has recorded just 66 tackles and five sacks.
New defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and might not see McClellin as a long-term fit.
Bennett might not be either, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who reported Wednesday that the tight end wants a new contract and the team has been fielding offers for him. Bennett has not been participating in offseason workouts with the team.
Bennett, 28, had his best season in 2014, leading NFL tight ends with a career-best 90 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl as an alternate.
Bennett signed a four-year, $20.4 million deal in 2013 and is due about $5 million in each of the next two seasons. He will become a free agent in 2017. The top tight ends make at least $7.5 million a year.
According to Schefter, the Bears discussed trading Bennett to the Seattle Seahawks before the Seahawks acquired Jimmy Graham from the New Orleans Saints last month.
Coincidentally, Bennett’s brother, Michael, also is seeking an upgraded contract from the Seahawks, although the defensive lineman previously shot down a report that he wanted a trade. Michael chose the Seahawks over the Bears — and a chance to play with his brother — last offseason.
In Bears draft news Wednesday, Pace said he has taken calls from teams interested in possibly moving up to Chicago’s spot at No. 7 overall. Pace also said the Bears might consider trading up.
With wide receiver Brandon Marshall gone, the Bears need help at that position, and West Virginia’s Kevin White said Wednesday that he thinks the Bears will draft him at No. 7 if he is still there.
