NFL Trades That Should Happen- Part 1
Find out which teams need to make some trades to compete this year and why.
As preseason continues and more NFL teams weaknesses are exposed, either via players disappointing or untimely injuries, some teams have an overabundance of talent at some positions where others are lacking.
We’re going to look at some potential trades that make so much sense that they’ll never likely happen.
Alex Smith To The Buffalo Bills For A 1st Round Pick
I know what you’re thinking.
Why would the Kansas City Chiefs trade their starting quarterback to another AFC team?
The easy answer to that question is that Alex Smith is never going to be worth more than he is now and he’s not quite good enough to carry a team to the Super Bowl. The Chiefs have Chase Daniel, who is pretty much an Alex Smith clone. Daniel is mobile and can make all the same short to intermediate throws that Smith can.
Ridding Alex Smith’s hefty contract from the books will make it easier to keep the defense and running game together, the two things that actually carry Kansas City.
Why should Buffalo do the deal?
Although Alex Smith can’t carry a team deep into the playoffs, he wouldn’t have to with the Bills. He’s a good fit in Greg Roman’s offense (had his best season in it) and the weapons around him in Buffalo are better than anything he’s played with in his career.
The Bills core on defense is aging and their window is wide open. This will allow Tyrod Taylor at least one more year to learn on the bench before potentially taking over.
Bruce Irvin To The Jacksonville Jaguars For A 5th Round Pick
With second-round pick Frank Clark playing as well as he has, former first-round pick Bruce Irvin, who is entering the final year of his deal, is now expendable. Irvin has voiced his displeasure with the Seahawks organization when they didn’t pick up his fifth-year option.
“Worked for everything I got in my life this s— will b no different!” Irvin tweeted back in May. “I earns my keeps!
“Faced way tougher adversity getting outta them streets coming up!” Irvin tweeted. “That’s s— is nothing! F— THAT OPTION!”
Clearly Irvin is not in the Seahawks future plans and if they can grab a fifth- or conditional fourth-round pick for him in the 2016 NFL Draft, it would be more beneficial than waiting the extra year for a conditional pick.
What’s in it for the Jags?
Irvin would be coming on a completely free audition. If he doesn’t work out or if he wants too much money after the season, they simply let him walk and get a conditional pick back, possibly even higher than what they pay Seattle for his services.
In the short term, the Jaguars have a major pass rush deficiency. Irvin played for Gus Bradley when he was a rookie and is familiar with his system. Irvin is an outstanding athlete who would likely start immediately.
E.J. Manuel To The Seattle Seahawks For A 5th Round Pick
The Seattle Seahawks don’t have a legitimate backup quarterback to Russell Wilson, and E.J. Manuel needs a fresh start. Manuel is raw, yet talented and they can run a lot of the same zone-read type of stuff that the Seahawks fun with Wilson.
Manuel has some starting experience and his draft status won’t be a threat to Wilson, who is already a legend in the area.
Buffalo might or might not release Manuel, and he is no real threat to ever be the starting quarterback in Orchard Park. He needs a fresh start and the Bills can get some compensation in return.
