NFL to Propose Developmental League in 2017
Find out why the NFL is considering a developmental league.
For the first time in over a decade, the National Football League is open to the idea of generating a developmental league. The NBA has the D-League, while MLB has the infamous farm system, so why doesn’t the NFL have some sort of B level league?
Well, considering fans can watch professional football at least three days a week during the heart of the season, it’s hard to imagine fans willing to soak in some lower-level football and if you place the season in the spring, will fans even care?
These are questions that must be answered, but at least they’re going into this with an open mind.
“We lost a lot of money on the NFL Europe, but there were a lot of things the league did well, and for all of those reasons—coaches, officiating, players, quarterbacks in particular—[a developmental league is] something we really do need to be looking at and studying,” Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones said. “The time might be right to do it.”
The NFL’s head of football operations, Troy Vincent, will begin the process following the season.
