NFL Senior Bowl Week Rumor Mill
Find out the latest rumors about drug use, who missed out at the Senior Bowl and what a QB thinks of his former team.
Kicks And Giggles
Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker was suspended by the NFL earlier this season for the use of banned substances.
The substance that Welker allegedly took was “Molly,” a synthetic pure version of the drug ecstasy. Molly is said to give the taker a sense of euphoria, with increased sociability.
Where the story gets more interesting is the manner in which Welker received his drugs.
A source told Football Insiders that Wes Welker’s “drug dealer” was in fact a former Denver Broncos teammate.
This is Welker’s brain. This is where he got his drugs. Any questions?
Missed Opportunity For Hundley
While many outlets are making lists of rising and falling prospects from the Senior Bowl, perhaps the most disappointing player didn’t even make the trip.
UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley declined his Senior Bowl invite and thus missed a major opportunity to raise his draft stock.
With no clear cut No. 3 quarterback in this year’s draft behind Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, Hundley had a real opportunity to move up with a good Senior Bowl week. Instead, his abstinence showed a lack of competitiveness.
“I’m disappointed,” an NFC Scout told Football Insiders during the Senior Bowl. “He really had a chance to move up because none of the guys here are doing anything.”
With Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty struggling mightily with taking snaps from center, and Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson showing much inaccuracy, this was a great opportunity for Hundley to look great by comparison.
Notable Quotes
- Bengals QB Andy Dalton has been named to a roster spot for the Pro Bowl, the NFL announced today. It’s the second Pro Bowl for Dalton, who also was named for the 2011 season. Dalton was a seventh alternate in this past December’s Pro Bowl voting, and for this year’s game he replaces Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers, who is unable to participate due to an injury. When presented with the news that Andy Dalton was a Pro Bowler after a 19-touchdown, 17-interception season, a league source chuckled and said: “That’s all you need to know about the Pro Bowl. Dalton is the definition of mediocre.”
- Ohio State Buckeyes national champion wide receiver Devon Smith was a popular man at Senior Bowl media night, as he did countless interviews. Football Insiders caught up with Smith and asked him which of his three Buckeyes quarterbacks would make the best NFL quarterback. Smith gave the politically correct answer, “All three can play in the NFL.” He then said that Cardale Jones had the best arm and explained some of his exploits. Smith feels that Jones can throw the football in excess of 85 yards and reminisced about a story at a high school came. “Cardale got down on one knee and threw the football 65 yards,” Smith said. “It was amazing.”
- Duke guard Laken Tomlinson varied from the usual PC quotes about “getting a chance to compete on the next level,” when he simply stated “I can come in and be a starter in the NFL right now.” The young man dazzled everyone in Wednesday’s press conference, and is backing it up on the football field. Scouts believe that Tomlinson can go as high as the late first or second round.
- University of Miami wide receiver Phillip Dorsett is a special type of fast. He has his eyes on the NFL Combine 40-yard dash record. When Football Insiders’ asked Dorsett how fast he could run, he responded, “I was once clocked at 4.21 (in the 40) at Miami.”
- We caught up with former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard at Senior Bowl practice on Thursday as he was trying to promote a new business. Garrard weighed in on some of the prospects, and when the conversation moved to the current Jaguars team, he gave a candid scouting report of the Jaguars current offensive line when he said, “That young man (Blake Bortles) is going to get hurt back there.” The former Pro Bowler added, “It’s really not that different from when I was there.” Shots fired against his old teammates.
