NFL roundup: Vick defends Goodell

Published

on

New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick encouraged those who are demanding that Roger Goodell be fired over his handling of recent domestic violence cases involving NFL players to give the commissioner time to resolve the issues.

Vick disagrees that Goodell should lose his job, saying patience should be observed while addressing the domestic violence allegations involving Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and others.

“You have to give the man a chance, you have to give him a chance, you have to give everybody a chance to get it right,” Vick said.

Goodell indefinitely suspended Vick in 2007 when the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges. Vick missed the 2007 and 2008 seasons while serving a prison sentence before he was reinstated by Goodell and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I think some situations are more complicated than others,” Vick said. “You’re not going to get it right all the time or the first time. These situations that are arising are situations that we’ve never dealt with before in the NFL — from a PR standpoint, just from a situation standpoint.

“It’s kind of new to everybody. That’s why we’re talking about it right now. It has to be dealt with. Nobody is perfect. Nobody is going to make the correct decisions right there and then on the spot when faced with all forms of adversity.”

-Denver Broncos head coach John Fox continues to stress that a team not looking out the windshield is asking for a crash.

While pushing the conversation as far away from the crash-and-burn result that was February’s Super Bowl for the Broncos, Fox and Denver are headed to CenturyLink Field in Seattle for another showdown with the hard-hitting Seahawks.

“I can’t speak for them but I know we have 17 new starters, nine on defense, five on offense (three) on special teams. Their team is different, our team is different; it’s a new season,” Fox said. “We’re not spending time looking in the rearview mirror. We’re looking out the windshield and we have a huge test coming up Sunday.”

Fox said he has turned up the practice tracks a little bit louder this week but didn’t care to revisit the game-opening botched snap that quarterback Peyton Manning intimated was caused by noise from the fabled “12s” Seattle’s fan base collective recognized as the 12th Man.

–Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green returned to practice and head coach Marvin Lewis said he expects the Pro Bowler to play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

Green left Sunday’s victory over the Atlanta Falcons after one series with a foot injury. The ligament strain was labeled a toe injury by the Bengals.

Lewis said Green does not have a long-term injury. Speculation that the team would rest Green ahead of the Week 4 bye to give him time to heal might not be necessary.

However, Green is still expected to be a game-time decision.

–Late Wednesday, the Arizona Cardinals deactivated running back Jonathan Dwyer after he had been arrested earlier in the day on charges of aggravated assault stemming from two alleged domestic violence incidents involving his wife and son.

Thursday, the 25-year-old running back was placed on the nonfootball injury list. While Dwyer is not injured, NFL Network reported he will be placed under close medical and psychological evaluation because of alleged suicide concerns raised by some close to him.

Dwyer spent Wednesday night in jail and appeared in court Thursday before being released. Also, details emerged about the alleged incidents.

The Arizona Republic reported that Dwyer broke his wife’s nose when he head-butted her after she bit his lip to stop his unwanted sexual advances during a July domestic dispute.

Also, the Cardinals waived running back Chris Rainey.

Rainey’s career has been marked by trouble since he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012 and subsequently arrested.

–Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall addressed at a news conference the allegations of domestic assault made against him in 2007 by a former girlfriend and reports that the NFL knew about the situation and chose to ignore it.

The NFL suspended Marshall three games at the time as a result of the accusations made by Rasheeda Watley but later reduced the ban to one game.

Marshall distributed a letter to reporters on from his former girlfriend to commissioner Roger Goodell that addressed the allegations.

“I will let you know that he never hurt me or hit me,” the letter stated. “I was pressured by my family to make up certain things to get money, I was told to say that Brandon hit me and hurt me so that I could get him to pay to keep me quiet.”

The veteran wideout brought up his history in light of the recent domestic violence cases that have rocked the NFL. “We need to get all the details before we can play judge or jury because there are two sides to every story,” Marshall said.

–Suspended Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson is scheduled to be eligible to be reinstated following Week 3. But now, his future might be in limbo following the revelation he was cited by police in July for having marijuana and an open bottle of alcohol in his car while driving on a restricted driver’s license.

An incident report released Thursday, said Simpson was ticketed, but not arrested despite violating terms of a 2013 arrest.

Simpson is serving a three-game suspension for the November drunken-driving arrest.

–John Elway’s son has pleaded guilty and sentenced to probation after being charged with assault involving his girlfriend.

John Elway III had been charged with disturbing the peace and assault in what police said was a violent fight with his girlfriend in May, according to the Denver Post. According to a probable cause statement, Elway pulled his girlfriend out of his vehicle, ripping pieces of her hair out.

As part of a plea agreement, the District Attorney dropped the assault charge and Elway pleaded guilty to the disturbing the peace. He was sentenced to one year of probation. If Elway finished the year without incident, he can withdraw his guilty plea and the case will be dismissed, the Post said.

–The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that rookie wide receiver Marquise Lee will not play Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts because of a hamstring injury.

During Wednesday’s practice, he re-aggravated a hamstring injury that he first felt before last week’s game against Washington.

Lee’s injury further depletes the Jaguars’ receiving corps. Three other receivers will miss or are likely to miss the Colts game, according to the Florida times-Union.

–EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — When New York Giants linebacker Jon Beason left MetLife Stadium following last Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals with his right foot encased in a walking boot, things looked grim for the defensive co-captain’s immediate future.

Four days later, things might just be looking up for the 29-year-old, whose status was initially announced by the team as being an aggravation of his previous toe injury suffered on June 12 during an OTA workout.

“It’s feeling better, surprisingly better, I would say,” he said. “In the game I stepped on someone’s foot and I felt a pop. It scared me right away, we went and got some pictures, but it’s feeling a lot better right away, so it’s an indication that it’s probably just scar tissue moving.”

–VALLEY RANCH, Texas — Turns out Tony Romo was correct when he said his absence from practice with tightness in his back was no cause for alarm. Romo returned to practice Thursday.

“I think the tightness just happens from based off volume of things you’ve done,” said Romo, who had surgery Dec. 27 to repair a herniated disk in his back. “Obviously, a lot of throwing we’ve done over the last few weeks. That part of it. And then just wanting to have the ability to always make sure that you feel good going into the rest of the week. I’ll be back. I’m good to go.”

While the Cowboys plan to lean on the run game to take pressure off Romo and move away from the team’s pass happy ways of the past, they don’t want to be typecast as a team limited on offense because of concerns about their quarterback’s ability to make all the throws or escape pressure. The St. Louis Rams, with a defensive line loaded with first-round picks, are determined to get to Romo.

–Cornerback Demontre Hurst re-signed with the Chicago Bears and could be active Monday against the New York Jets.

Hurst is primarily a special teams player but has worked as a nickel back in Mel Tucker’s defense.

The Bears placed cornerback Charles Tillman on injured reserve with a torn triceps on Tuesday.
